Weird and Wonderful Information about Wellies

Welly Poems

"Ode to a Welly" by Maggie Chaplin

Farmer Tustian's welly has walked for countless miles,
squelched through muddy gateways and clambered over tiles
It's been polished by the morning dew and clarted up the dung,
and up till now its merits have largely gone unsung.
It's pushed the spade and turned the sod, heeled in the winter kale,
It's climbed the hill and scaled the fence or lingered in the vale.
On shingle nearly lost it's grip slithered on the brash.
Been still with cold and slick with oil caked in bonfire ash.
It's been streaked with grease at shearing, splashed with herbicidal spray
And doused with disinfectant to keep FMD away.
It's trampled dock and thistleand scuffed the autumn leaves,
Stamped on irksome molehills, been trodden on by theaves.
It's paced both recent furrow and swathes of new-mown hay
And cracked the ice on puddles on frosty winter's day.
It seemed this life was endless till it's partner split its sole
And was no longer watertight so had no useful role.
The worthless boot was thrown away but was then of its mate?
Its walking days were finished. It had another fate.
The farmers trusty welly now no longer shields his tread,
Transported by an engine, it sheathes tractor parts instead.

"Yellow Wellies" by David Axton

New yellow wellies for someone aged four
Guarding the bed every night;
Waiting to be
The first things she'll see
When she opens her eyes to the light.
Bright yellow wellies for someone aged four
Jumping in puddles for fun
Splashing aways
A great game to play
And something that has to be done.
Strong yellow wellies for someone aged four
Kicking up leaves in the wood;
The pile of leaves
Comes up the the knees
So the kicking is not very good.
Warm yellow wellies for someone aged four
Lying around on their own
Not much to do
Now winter is through
And the feet of their owner have grown.

Hunter History Facts

  • The First Duke of Wellington instructed his shoemaker, Holby of St James's Street, London, to modify the 18th century Hessian boot. The boot was designed of soft calfskin leather which stopped at mid-calf closely fitting around the leg proving hard-wearing for battle.
  • In 1852 a French man named Hiram Hutchinson met Charles Goodyear, who just invented vulcanization process of natural rubber. Goodyear went on to manufacture the famous tyres while Hutchinson bought the patent to manufacture footwear. Hutchinson moved back to France starting the company "Aigle".
  • An American entrepreneur named Mr. Henry Lee Norris produced the first rubber Wellington boots in Scotland in 1856. Starting the company North British Rubber Company now known as Hunter Boot

How a Hunter Boot is Made

In its manufacture of welly boots, Hunter uses a variety of materials to obtain the best possible performance and comfort. However, not just any old materials are chosen for use, new fabrics go through a rigorous process of testing to ensure that they will perform at the highest levels and will be incredibly durable. Durability is an especially important issue to consider, since most Hunter Wellington bootswill be worked hard by their wearer and it is essential that they will last. Hunters stand by their Wellies 100% by offering 12 month warranty against faulty workmanship, meaning if your Hunters fall apart from fair wear and tear you get a replacement, you just simply contact the store you purchased them from with proof of your purchase and they will advise you if you qualify for a replacement.
What are Hunter boots made from?

Once the rubber arrives, it is mashed up, beaten and rolled out onto huge cutting tables, where different cutters (not unlike pastry cutters) are employed for each individual section of the boot. Step-by-step, each section is then placed on top of a metal 'last' (pictured at top of page) - starting with the original lining, neoprene or leather sock, followed by the heel piece and the rubber on the outside. Lastly the sole and finishing with the famous Hunter logo. The boots are then cooked, or vulcanised, in big ovens so all the molecules in the rubber are bonded together, making it stronger and waterproof. The boots are then trimmed, checked over thoroughly by one of the factory workers and packaged up for sale. There is very little waste as the unvulcanized rubber trimmings from the cutting table can just be mashed up and used again.

There are a number of fabrics which are used in the extensive range of Hunter wellies, and not just the supple green rubber that makes up the outer surface of the boot. These materials include a number of advanced textiles which have been specially developed for high performance clothing and footwear.

Some Hunter boots include the revolutionary Outlast fabric. Amazingly, this was originally formulated for NASA in order to offer the best possible temperature control for astronauts through their clothing. This clever fabric takes excess heat and stores it until such a time it is needed, then releases it. In boots, an Outlast fabric means that your feet should not get either too hot or too cold.

Another material that is utilised by Hunter in its production of outdoor footwear is the eVENT fabric. This offers all-day dryness, as tiny pores in the material allow sweat and water vapour to be wicked away from the skin. It also promotes warmth, as dry skin is more likely to be warm skin. eVENT fabrics feature particularly prominently in the range of Hunter walking and shooting boots.
Hunters have just released the New Balmoral Royal and Balmoral Sovereign range, providing ultimate climate control designed for maximum warmth. Superb quality field featuring a unique luxury grain leather leg lining. Bringing new heights of warmth and comfort, one of Hunters premier shooting boots.
